IDC photography video Follow Focus Wheel
Canon Explorer of Light’s Bruce Dorn is a big name in the DSLR photography/videography business. He has created one of the easiest solutions for keeping your focus. If you are shooting run and gun style, or a feature film his follow focus kit is proven to be the most compact fastest way to keep focus. The problem with manually focusing the lens on the camera is that you are turning the focus ring which can resort in a slight shake in your shot. The IDC follow focus is designed to keep your hands off the barrel allowing for smooth rack focus shots. We recently used the IDC follow focus in a music video shoot where we were shooting with mostly primes. Initially we were going to use the Redrock Micro follow focus but the IDC proved to be easier while switching different lenses.
What we really liked about using follow focus setup is the ability to create your marks and attach a whip to pull focus. The wip is basically is an extension of the focus wheel so you can pull focus from behind the camera or from another monitor.
The original wheel was a simple skateboard wheel but the redesigned aluminum wheel combines the concept of the skateboard wheel with the professionalism of a wip attachment and enough space to add tape to create your focus marks.
Currently the only drawback until the end of May is that it only works without the battery grip. Bruce said his new version will work with the grip and with the 1D4 form factor.
The price of this unit is $398 which is much cheaper than other full follow focus systems on the market. You can buy it at IDC’s store HERE!
